| Six years after your training, I am still using the methods and materials. Parents like them so much and the children I worked with are doing so well in school thanks to you. --A parent educator. |
About Me I have a BA summa cum laude from the University of Minnesota. I also have a lifetime California teaching credential which was earned as part of a program (run by Herb Kohl, the educational writer/thinker) designed to get credentials to highly experienced teachers. I am the author/illustrator (along with my Kenyan students) of a childrens' book (Growing Up in Kenya, MacMillan Publishing Co., 1975). In the course of a 35 year career, I have worked both privately and for various programs and agencies in places as diverse as the, the highlands of Kenya, western Montana, northern California, rural Pennsylvania, and Brooklyn, NY, and I speak Spanish and Kipsigis, a Kenyan language. I currently divide my time primarily between a small town in Western Pennsylvania and New York City. I have spent the last forty years developing the innovative teaching methods and curriculum that are at the heart of Third Way programs. My life's work has become an exploration of teaching methods and opportunities for real learning that are possible outside the traditional classroom. I believe that there is a set of teaching skills that can be taught to any interested adult, and that the future of education lies in giving every child (and adult learner) the opportunity for individualized, stress free learning. In this context, it is possible for students of all ages to master traditional academic skills, and also cultivate creativity and intellectual curiosity. I think of this work as my contribution to the democratization of teaching and learning. |
