The Third Way: A new way to teach and learn It's time for a radical change in teaching methods and curricula. Third Way methods facilitate powerful learning in non-traditional settings.

The Third Way Principles

Five principles for teaching and learning

1 — Diffuse anxiety
2 — Conversational Teaching
3 — Pattern recognition

4 — Practice-based learning
5 — Mobilize all sensory systems

About the principles

1 — Diffuse anxiety
Children who are anxious or fearful cannot learn. Research shows that the brain responds to fear by becoming less flexible or even atrophying. Third Way tutors are trained to diffuse anxiety and develop the child’s ability to focus and listen.

2 —Conversational Teaching
The Third Way offers alternatives to the question/answer method of instruction. Instead, parents, tutors, and teachers learn to use friendly and interesting adult talk to guide children into new ways of thinking.

3 — Pattern recognition
The human brain uses pattern recognition to make sense of a complex world. Studies have shown that experts in a field are able to quickly see patterns as they confront new information. We offer simple, practical methods for developing this skill, which is crucial for academic success.

4 — Practice-based learning
Careful repetition combined with full engagement in the task at hand can actually build new neural pathways. Unlike rote-learning, our games and exercise require complete attention on the part of the student, thus creating opportunities to practice new ways of thinking.

5 — Mobilize all sensory systems
Third Way methods teach students to link eye, ear, hand, and brain. Our tutors use simultaneous visual, physical, verbal, and symbolic presentation of material to help students connect all learning pathways.
